PONCA – As the summer schedule ramps up, so will weekly events at Ponca State Park.

According to a release, activities for Wednesday, June 1 – Friday, June 3 will open each morning with an introduction class from 9 – 11 a.m. Meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex for each event as all equipment is provided.

The muzzleloader session will be held Wednesday morning for those who are 12 and older with adult supervision. Cost is $1 per two shots.

Macroinvertebrates will allow visitors to join a park naturalist from 1 – 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday for water quality measurements. Attendees will try and catch and identify the small creatures that live in the Ponca Pond.

Moving into Thursday, June 2, introduction to the .22 Rifle will be for ages 10 and up with adult supervision. Cost is $3 per 10 rounds.

Critter Corner then will be held from 1 – 1:45 p.m. where parkgoers can join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more while hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event where you’ll even get to meet some resident critters.

Close out Thursday afternoon by making your own fishing lure between 3 – 3:45 p.m. Colors, sizes and shapes all react differently under water. Visitors will learn how lures work to catch different species of fish and make their own out of everyday materials. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. as this event is recommended for ages six and up with adult supervision. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center at 3 p.m. on Thursday as cost is $2 per kit.

Entering the weekend on Friday, an introduction to tomahawk will be held again from 9 – 11 a.m. for those eight years of age and older with adult supervision. Cost is $1 per six throws.

The ‘Campfire Cooking’ session from 1 – 1:45 p.m. will answer the questions of what does it take to cook over an open fire and have you ever heard of a pie-iron? Participants will learn fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking their very own snack. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before meeting at the west shelter at 1 p.m. Cost is $3 per kit.

Close out Friday by building your own bird feeder. Visitors will learn about some of the common backyard bids which can be found at Ponca State Park. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and meet behind the Resource and Education Center as cost is $1 per kit to create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take home.

The aquatic center is open daily from noon until 6 p.m. as cost is $7 for adults (12+) and $5 for those between the ages of 3-12. Hours may change due to weather or staffing.

Also, call or visit the Resource and Education Center to reserve a time for horseback riding. A waiver is required, with a maximum of 12 riders being ages 6 and up. For approximately 45 minutes, cost is $25 per rider as rides may be canceled due to staffing or weather.
