PONCA – Introduction courses continue each morning this week at Ponca State Park.

According to a release, Ponca State Park will offer introduction to archery from 9 – 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23 for those five and older with adult supervision. Cost is $1 per six arrows.

Other 9 – 11 a.m. weekday introductory courses include muzzleloader and the .22 rifle on Wednesday and Thursday. The muzzleloader course is open for those 12 and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 per two shots while the .22 rifle will be available for those 10 and older with adult supervision as cost is $3 per 10 rounds.

All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

Moving into Tuesday afternoon, the 1 – 1:45 p.m. activity will focus on dragonflies and damselflies. Participants will be able to learn and observe why these species are extremely important and fun to study. These aquatic (nymph stage) and aerial (adult stage) creatures are a staple of aquatic food webs and beneficial as predators of mosquitos. Park officials will also do their best to catch some of the acrobats. Meet at the Ponca Pond for this free event.

Critter Corner will be offered on Wednesday afternoon from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more including hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event which will include a chance to meet some of the resident critters at Ponca State Park.

Also on Thursday, ‘Soap Carving’ will be the feature activity from 1 – 2:30 p.m. Carving is one of our oldest crafts as this ancient task can help facilitate an understanding of the form and function of animals, plants and simple objects by visualizing and finding its form in the simplest of objects. Join a Ponca State Park naturalist during ‘Soap Carving’ in this carving world of creativity, relaxation, fun and satisfaction as well as more than 11,000 years of tradition. Carve a small animal, plant or summer object in a bar of soap and take it home with you.

Pre-register and pay for the ‘Soap Carving’ event at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. then meet behind the center at 1 p.m. as cost is $2 per kit.
