Wayne Volunteer Fire Department To Host Fireman’s Breakfast Sunday

WAYNE – Make plans to attend the second Fireman’s Breakfast event in 2018 this weekend in Wayne.

Hosted by the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department, the fundraiser will last from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 7. The Wayne Fire Hall is located at 510 Tomar Drive.

Fire Chief Phil Monahan invites everyone to attend.

“Look at the trucks, look at the equipment,” said Monahan. “We are going to have a person there for fire smoke detectors. We got a drawing for a few of them during the day.

The Wayne Volunteer Fire Department hosts two Fireman’s Breakfast events with one in the Spring and another around Fall-time.

Roughly 36 members make up the fire department, with two cadets, as all are scheduled to be serving Sunday. Boy scouts and girl scouts will also be earning hours for their badges by helping out.

Items being served include omelets, pancakes, French toast, sausage, biscuits & gravy as well as a drink. Free will donations will be accepted for the Fireman’s Breakfast event.

Chief Monahan mentioned the department would like to say thank you to the community.

“For donating what they do donate for us and everything like that,” Monahan mentioned. “Like a set of bunker gear to outfit one firefighter is right now around $2,600 to outfit one person.”

Every 10 years the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) regulation laws state the department needs to get new coats, pants, helmets, boots and gloves.

Proceeds from the event will also go towards the purchase of fire and rescue equipment. On the rescue side, the fire department is getting more involved in hazmat, confined space, rope rescue, grain bin extrication and more. In year’s past, the Fall Fireman’s Breakfast will draw crowds between 1,050 to 1,250.

The Wayne VFD serves both the City of Wayne and the Wayne Rural Fire District No. 2.

Monahan added a message to the farmers.

“Be playing it safe out in the field,” Monahan added. “Watch your equipment and if you smell smoke, stop and check them out. Make sure you carry water or a fire extinguisher with them; just be careful.”

With daylight savings time approaching in early November, make sure to check your smoke detectors and every 10 years replace smoke detectors with batteries and every 15 years for wired smoke detectors. Rental property tenants should also have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
