Wayne Volunteer Fire Department Previews 125th Anniversary For April Of 2019

WAYNE – Just about a week after hosting their second of two Fireman’s Breakfast events, the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department welcomed community members back during a weekly event.

After last week’s event was held on a Thursday, Chamber Coffee was back on normal time Friday morning from the Wayne Fire Hall.

The Wayne Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 34 active members and two cadets.

Cadets can be anyone from 16-18 years of age while maintaining a C average in high school. They can be at the Fire Hall until 9 p.m. on a week-night and till 11 p.m. on the weekend, according to Fire Chief Phil Monahan.

“On a fire scene we notify them as having green helmets if the public sees them,” said Monahan. “The green helmets tells us okay that’s a cadet and they cannot, what we call a hot zone, get up into a fire.”

For those interested can fill out an application form, get a letter from three different teachers and a letter from their parents.

Also, the fire department will be celebrating 125 years of being in the City of Wayne on Saturday, April 13 – Sunday, April 14, 2019. A committee has started to work on planning the event.

“I know an Open House and everything and fun for the kids,” Monahan added. “Probably showing some shelters burnt and showing how fast a fire can go through a house and everything like that.”

Monahan wanted to make sure everyone has their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors with new batteries when the clocks are changed as well as updating the alarms in every household.

Also, make sure your fire extinguishers are up to date.

“It’s a good idea to flip them upside down because the powder gets caked in the container if it sits in one spot for a year or so,” Monahan mentioned. “So, flip them upside down made sure the fire extinguisher powder gets loose.”

Join Haven House on Friday, October 19 for the next Chamber Coffee event at 10 a.m.
