Wayne Volunteer Fire Department Hosts Friday Morning Chamber Coffee

WAYNE – Members of the Wayne community were able to visit the Wayne Fire Hall on Friday morning for Chamber Coffee that was hosted by Fire Chief Phil Monahan and the WVFD. Several current and former firefighters were present to enjoy coffee and conversation on the chilly morning.

Phil Monahan who has been the Fire Chief in Wayne for five years now was able to address those in attendance and shared how the WVFD has grown over the past year.

“This past year we’ve gotten quite a few more people on, we are up to 38 members now. Out of the 38 members we have two that are cadets, which are from the age of 16-18 and actually they are two brothers so it’s kind of cool to have those guys on,” said Monahan.

The department is allowed to have up to 46 members on and Monahan thinks there will be a couple more people that will be joining in the near future. The fire and rescue department has been training in situations dealing with hazardous materials, confined spaces, and vehicle extrication recently keeping them busy and keeping their skills sharp. The WVFD also recently hosted its annual breakfast fundraiser last weekend which was a big success with proceeds going toward extra equipment for the department.

“The fireman’s breakfast we had a little over 1,200 people come. We can’t thank the public enough for that. That was excellent to have that big of a turnout,” said Monahan.

Chief Monahan wanted to stress the importance of practicing fire safety within your home. He wants the public to know that both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be changed out every ten years. Most of these devices should have a stamp on the bottom of them that states what year they were made. Be sure to change out the batteries also if necessary.

“We want to make sure that people are checking their furnace filters, checking their smoke alarms, and checking their carbon monoxide detectors,” said Monahan.

Monahan also added to make sure that furnace filters are cleaned properly and to avoid unnecessary clutter near a furnace or hot-water heater.

Two members of the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department were recognized not long ago by the Northeast Nebraska Volunteer Firefighters Association for years of service. Bill Kugler (70 years) and Richard Korn (50 years) both received the honor and were awarded with plaques back in early September.
