Wayne State (un)Accompanied Faculty Tuba Recital To Be Showcased Thursday Evening

WAYNE – A weeknight Faculty Tuba Recital will take over Ley Theatre on the campus of Wayne State College.

According to a release from the WSC Department of Music, Dr. Josh Calkin will showcase the 7:30 p.m. concert on Thursday, March 31. Entitled (un)Accompanied, the evening features repertoire by classical music, poetry, hip-hop and heavy metal.

The concert is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, go to www.wsc.edu/watch-live as the program is accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/music.

Prerecorded soundtracks support Dr. Calkin’s tuba proficiency throughout (un)Accompanied.

The tracks provide a backdrop of synthesizers, spoken word, rock drums, and thrashing metal music. “New England Reveries” by Neal Corwell contemplates the wonder of nature. “My Mountain Top” by Andy Scott delivers the perfect somnolent summer day.

The aggressive “Kick-Ass Sonata” by Brian Sadler amplifies Dr. Calkin’s virtuosic command of the tuba. “Heavy Metal Concerto” by Evan Zegiel is a creative clash between classical and heavy metal with challenging instrumental articulation. Dr. Calkin is Director of Bands at WSC as well as an active performer, clinician, and competition adjudicator.
