Wayne High Speech To Be Represented In Five Categories At State, Placed Runner-Up At Districts

COLUMBUS – Host Columbus Lakeview may have stolen the show during the Class B-4 District Speech Meet with nearly 100 points, but Wayne High also had a roughly 100-point difference in the second spot Monday.

From Columbus Lakeview High School, the Wayne Speech Team had at least one Superior Rating in each of the 18 events and most scored two or more.

The Vikings recorded 420 team sweepstake points to be crowned champion, followed in second by Wayne High with 322 points, Douglas County West took third scoring 225 points, Schuyler in fourth with 221 points and Columbus Scotus rounded out the top five teams with 180 points. Other team results found West Point-Beemer in sixth (116), Arlington taking seventh (78) and Wahoo in eighth (47).

Individually for Wayne High five categories, featuring eight individuals have qualified for the State Speech Tournament scheduled for next Thursday, March 22 on the campus of Nebraska-Kearney. District Champions went to Christopher Woerdemann in Extemporaneous, Megan Keiser in Humorous Prose and Jack Osnes in Serious Prose. District runner-up results went to Nate Burrows in Entertainment and the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Isaac Davis, Dylan Anderson, Woerdemann, Walker Hochstein and Liam Spieker also brought home second place in their event.

Other medalists included the OID team of Juan Hernandez, Annika Wachter and Ruben Vega (seventh), Halie Chinn (sixth – Informative), Liz Junck (sixth – Persuasive), Miranda Fehringer (fifth – Persuasive), Jack Osnes (fifth – Humorous), Megan Keiser (fourth – Poetry), Maura Loberg (fourth – Informative) and Jaci Torres (fourth – Serious).

Other area speech teams looking to punch their ticket to state will compete in the C2-2 District from Wayne State College (hosted by Oakland-Craig) today while the C1-3 District at Hartington Cedar Catholic, the C2-3 District from Hartington-Newcastle and the D2-3 District from Bancroft-Rosalie will all take place on Wednesday, March 14.

State Speech will be held at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, March 22 for Classes A, B and C1 while Classes C2, D1 and D2 will compete on Friday, March 23.

 

C1-3 teams: Battle Creek, Hartington Cedar Catholic, Madison, Norfolk Catholic, Pierce, Ponca, Stanton, Winnebago and Wisner-Pilger.

C2-2 teams: Archbishop Bergan, Cedar Bluffs, East Butler, Guardian Angles Central Catholic, Homer, Howells-Dodge, Oakland-Craig, Pender and Walthill.

C2-3 teams: Creighton, Crofton, Hartington-Newcastle, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Lutheran High Northeast, Neligh-Oakdale, Wakefield and West Holt.

D2-3 teams: Bloomfield, Clarkson, Leigh, Lindsay Holy Family, Lyons-Decatur Northeast, Newman Grove, Santee, Winside and Wynot.
