WAYNE – Of the 6,007 total FFA members attending the Nebraska State FFA Convention in Lincoln from April 6 – 8, 27 members of the Wayne Chapter also participated receiving top honors and individual contest awards.

From sessions at the Pinnacle Bank Arena as well as contests on east campus and in downtown hotels, State FFA was ‘in-person’.

With the more than 6,000 members, several teachers also attended as Wayne Agriculture Educator, Toni Rasmussen said her highlight was getting to collaborate with other chapters.

“Right now, there’s a lot of Ag Ed openings,” said Rasmussen. “So, we were discussing how they are going to fill those and what’s going on in the world of Ag Ed because UNL made some new hires. As well one of them being at the Haskell Ag Lab to help local Ag teachers.”

The Wayne FFA Chapter, in their fifth year, was recognized by participating in Hall of Chapters as Ag members focused on Ag Safety across the state along with Connecting Chapters Ag Literacy.

A highlight was the National Chapter Award along with Wayne FFA for the first time being recognized in the top three for the three different categories that the National Chapter has of ‘Building Communities’; ‘Strengthening Agriculture and ‘Growing Leaders’.

“So, last fall our application that made it to state got three out of three stars at the national level,” Rasmussen added. “So, now this year at the state level we received premier chapter. So, at least the top 20 in the state and received a Gold Rating there. Then in addition to that, we got second in the Strengthening Agriculture category.”

Wayne FFA also participated in Mercy Meals and packaged food for Ukraine Refuges.

A total of 13 seniors also earned their State FFA Degree being Ethan Ankeny, Alyssa Carlson, James Dorcey, Mason Frevert, Amara Hurlbert, Jamie Janke, Ellie Jech, Rubie Klausen, Kiara Krusemark, Mikaela McManigal, Mia Nelson, Tyler Reinhardt and Mady Sievers.

Also, for the first time Wayne FFA had Riley Haschke and Olivia Hanson performed in the choir. To watch the recorded sessions, go to neaged.org to hear both sing their solos in session six.

The Wayne FFA Chapter will next hold meetings in April and May prior to their FFA Banquet on May 1. Other events include State Horse Judging in May; Chapter Officer Leadership Training in May, SAE visits, parade float, Wayne County Fair and community service throughout the summer.

Rasmussen mentioned they’ll also install their new officers as well as taking a look at what they can improve on moving forward.

“Involving our community, parents and school as well,” Rasmussen mentioned. “Because they’ve all been really big supporters from the very start of this. So, to have our fifth year wrap up here is a great time to kind of look and assess and reevaluate to what our next steps are.”
