Wayne County Courthouse To Close Tuesday, Staff Will Report For Appointment-Only

WAYNE – Commissioners in Wayne County voted 2-1 to close the courthouse beginning Tuesday during an emergency meeting Monday morning while also discussing more about the COVID-19 virus.

The courthouse was closed to the public and all nonessential personnel this past Friday, March 20 but re-opened Monday, March 23 and will now close again starting Tuesday expect by appoint-only.

Commissioners Dean Burbach and Jim Rabe voted to close the courthouse since other counties were doing the same while Terry Sievers voted against because he didn’t think they needed to close the doors at this time. Commissioner Sievers wants to protect the constituents and employees but didn’t think it was a necessary step as of now until there was a confirmed case closer.

Staff will still report to work as county officials want visitors to know the main entrance door will be locked until further notice. The public will need to call the office they would like to meet first as admittance to the courthouse during regular business hours will be for necessary business only.

A release was also sent out last Wednesday stating that many public services can be completed online. This included renewing vehicle registration, paying property taxes, driver’s license (dmv.nebraska.gov), voter registration and searching Wayne county property records.

Many forms are also located on the waynecountyne.org website which can be printed off, completed and emailed, mailed or placed in the drop box. The drop box is located on the north side of the courthouse.

County officials ask their patrons to understand that conditions regarding the courthouse may change from day to day, but will continue to do their best in communicating any changes to the media and public as soon as decisions are made.

Wayne county employees will also be available by phone, email or mail.
