WAYNE – As the month of September approaches so does the postponed 40th annual Wayne Chicken Show.
Normally the Chicken Show is held on the second weekend in July but has been delayed to Saturday, September 12 due to COVID-19 this year. The event is all about celebrating chickens and their unique form.
Abby Schademann is the Marketing, Tourism and Events Coordinator for Wayne Area Economic Development.
The Wayne Chicken Show Committee has put in the extra work meeting earlier this week at the new location of this year’s Chicken Show being the Wayne County Fairgrounds, according to Schademann.
“We were just solidifying our schedule of events for the day,” said Schademann. “Then we were also just talking about the layout of how we are setting everything up just so we can see it in person.”
Due to COVID-19 restrictions on parades, the event will transition into a window/lawn decorating contest for those driving around town called “Cruise the Coops”. The event will last from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12.
“It’s going to be like a reverse parade but there’s no official route,” Schademann added. “We will have you on a map that we are able to have on our social media and website and give that out to everybody. Then you can cruise around and check out everybody’s decorating skills.”
For those who would like to participate, contact the WAED office as registration is $10. The deadline to sign up is September 4 but the chamber office will work with businesses and community members.
Businesses are welcome to decorate their store front windows or display a parade float in their parking lot. Everyone else is also encouraged to participate by decorating their lawns. Entries will be judged and prizes awarded.
Awards will be given out to Best Chicken Themed related, Best Theme related (40 Years of Egg’cellence) and People’s Choice Award.
Another restriction would be tossing out items to those who pass by.
“So, we are encouraging business that if they want to hand stuff out like they normally would to drop it down at the office,” Schademann mentioned. “We’re going to bag it up and for the first 200 people that come in with their People’s Choice vote they get that bag of goodies.”
The People’s Choice Award will be submitted at the information booth from the fairgrounds.
The September 12 free entertainment will be provided by Ted and Alice Miller
This year’s one-day bird-bash will feature a car show, cornhole tournament, cement auction and live chicken flying.
Moving into the afternoon, the ‘World’s Largest Chicken Dance’ will take place around 1 p.m. before Chicken Show contests are scheduled for later in the afternoon. These contests include Chicken Legs (2:30 p.m.); National Cluck-Off (3 p.m.); Hard Boiled Egg Eating (3:30 p.m.) as well as Egg Toss along with Egg Drop/Catch (4 p.m.)
Fireworks will then close out the Chicken Show at 8 p.m.
