Wakefield School Board Approves Contract for Stadium Project

WAKEFIELD – A contract for over $3.7 million was officially signed for Wakefield Community Schools’ stadium project during the board of education meeting Monday night. Also discussed during the meeting were several policies as well as partnering with a school fundraising service.

The Trojans are another step closer to a football and track stadium on school grounds. School board member Jeff Keagle motioned to approve a $3,781,050 contract with Nemaha Sports Construction for the creation of the facility. Initial budgeting for the project was projected to be about $3.8 million according to superintendent Matt Farup.

“We owe Nemaha Construction a big thank you for working so hard the bids and work the bids and re-work the bids to get it down into our budget number,” Farup said.

An official groundbreaking ceremony for the sports complex will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m.

An agreement between Wakefield Community Schools and GiveCampus was also approved during Monday’s meeting. Farup told the board that working with the organization will streamline fundraising both on the school’s end and make it easier for those who want to donate. The agreement is for three years and will cost the district $27,620. While this will help with fundraising for the stadium project, it is not limited to that.

“This can be used by all organizations and groups affiliated with the school,” Farup said.

Revisions were approved to the district’s Extracurricular Drug Testing Policy. The changes helped cover the district and close loopholes for students who test positive during a season. Farup told the board the changes mirror the school’s actual practice when it comes to extracurricular drug screening. Sport Safe Testing Service, Inc. was also approved as the drug program administrator.

Policy 3058 was introduced and passed, regarding naming school facilities and properties. Revisions for Policy 4057, regarding superintendent evaluation timelines was approved and passed during the meeting as well.

The next regularly scheduled Wakefield School Board meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Wakefield Community Schools.
