Three-vehicle crash on Christmas night kills 1, sends 4 to the hospital

A three-vehicle crash in northeast Nebraska on Christmas evening killed an 82-year-old Hartington woman and sent four others to the hospital.

About 6 p.m. a pickup driven by Marjorie Novak, of Hartington, on U.S. Highway 81 in Cedar County, collided head-on with an SUV driven by a man from Yankton, South Dakota, authorities said. That man was not identified by the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office.

An SUV driven by 52-year-old Brenda Saltzman, of Sioux Falls, then hit the back of the unnamed man’s SUV, according to authorities.

Novak was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. All other drivers wore seat belts.

The unidentified man was taken to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton and was later life-flighted to Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries.

Saltzman and her two passengers were taken to the Yankton hospital by ambulance with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
