Sunrise, Sunset Bird Tours Being Offered Saturday At Ponca State Park

PONCA – Pack the family up and head to Ponca State Park for this weekend’s Marsh Madness.

According to a release from Ponca State Park, a sunrise bird tour will open the day on Saturday, March 5 at 6:30 a.m.

Plan on getting up before the birds and join an expert guide from the Loess Hills Audubon Society to watch waterfowl wake up and continue their migration. Make sure to dress for the weather and feel free to bring your binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras. Some equipment will be available to borrow.

Then later in the evening, parkgoers can watch the birds return to the safety of the marsh at dusk during the sunset bird tour at 5 p.m. An expert guide will accompany you as the group caravans to the wildlife viewing areas at the North Addition of Ponca State Park.

The sunrise and sunset bird tours are limited to 16 people. Call 402-755-2284 to sign-up for this free event and then meet at the Resource and Education Center.

Park officials will show you how to use technology to identify the nature and critters around you. The group will explore the apps iNaturalist, PlantNet and Merlin Bird ID. Cost is $1 per kit and you can meet in the Riverbluff Conference Room.

Later in the day on Saturday, a program titled ‘Raptors’ will last from 2 – 2:45 p.m. Raptors have certain characteristics that set them apart from other birds.
