Self-Guided Activities Available At Ponca State Park

PONCA – Plan a weekend trip to Ponca State Park and participate in several selft-guided family activities.

According to a release from Ponca State Park, events continue into the weekend.

Learn about Nebraska’s fish on Friday, June 12 from 10 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 2 p.m. with an interactive coloring book. The event is recommended for ages five and up while supplies last.

Also, park staff have noticed signs of Sasquatch, a wooly beast around the park. Each week, Sasquatch is spotted in a new location. See if your family can find him and take a selfie to share on the Ponca State Park Facebook page or email to ngpc.ponca@nebraska.gov.

Moving into Saturday, June 13, camp cooking 101 will be offered between 9 – 10 a.m. and noon – 1 p.m. A guidebook will be available to help attendees learn about the types of camp cooking and even provide a few recipes for you to try.

Between 10 – 11 a.m. as well as 1 – 2 p.m. a trivia board game will test your Lewis & Clark knowledge. The activity is recommended for ages 13 and up while supplies last.

Close out Saturday with a scavenger hunt at the Tri-State Overlook. See if you can complete the scavenger hunt while you hike the 1.2 miles of trail. The Overlook will provide spectacular views of the river and let you get a glimpse of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday where parkgoers can hike the Education Center Nature Trail. The trail is located behind the Resource and Education Center and is a great trail for young children as it’s only 0.17 miles long. Hikers will enjoy seeing a variety of plants and trees including little blue stem, Virginia waterleaf and bur oak. Also, watch for birds on this trail such as wild turkeys, red-bellied woodpeckers and white-breasted nuthatches.

Ponca State Park officials are excited to have families visit the park. While their programs are on a temporary hold, they’ll continue to provide visitors with self-guided activities. Staff asks attendees to recreate responsibly. Program materials are available on the west side of the Missouri River Resource and Education Center, on the Ponca State Park Facebook page and posted on the information boards throughout the park.
