School Board Members To Discuss Wayne Elementary Adding Fourth Section Of Kindergarten, Updates From Superintendent

WAYNE – As high school seniors earned their diploma this past weekend from Wayne Community Schools, the regularly scheduled May Board of Education meeting will take place on Monday, May 14 at 5 p.m.

From the Jr/Sr high school library, room 407, board members will discuss the second reading of the Early Retirement Incentive Program, along with approving changes to Resolution 5006 and first reading for the 2018-19 Jr/Sr High School Student Handbook.

The AIM Document for the 2018-19 Kindergarten Class will then be addressed under new business to move forward with a fourth section of kindergarten. The proposed action item talks about the 81 students who will make up the class, in which 12 students are Early Learning and another eight have special needs. With three sections, the elementary school would have 27 students per room. Per the Fire Marshall, Kindergarten classes need to be on the first level of fire escape.

Board members are told that a small classroom has been identified to hold 15-18 students. But, this would reduce the size of the three other classrooms. Another teacher would need to be hired as well. More information will be provided during the meeting.

WCS Superintendent, Mark Lenihan will also talk about school budget expenses projection for next year and update the board from the Nebraska Council of Schools Administrators (NCSA) Final Legislative Report.

The May Honor Coffee will follow the meeting at 6:30 p.m. from the Commons. The Power Drive Team and Spanish Honor Society Members will be honored.
