School-Based Mentoring Program Invites All To Chamber Coffee

WAYNE – Make plans to attend this week’s Friday morning Chamber Coffee hosted by Wayne Teammates.

From the Wayne Community Activity Center, located at 901 W 7th Street, the public is invited for the weekly Chamber Coffee event on March 22 at 10 a.m.

Shalee Hoffman is the coordinator while Jill Walling is the president of the Wayne Teammates board.

Hoffmann said the group has had a busy year with January being National Mentoring Month.

“So, we kept busy advertising and we would get out for public speaking,” said Hoffman. “We spoke at the school board and different things like that. We’ve been making matches throughout the entire year.”

Whenever a new mentor joins, they are trained and matched. Mentees can be nominated as early as third grade and the goal is for the mentor to stay with them until high school graduation. More male mentors are also needed as there are seven boys waiting on the list.

Teammates will be hosting an upcoming event in early April, according to Walling.

“We’re very fortunate that people across the state of Nebraska, the central Teammates office is able to get Runza to do this every year,” Walling added. “So, it’s a state-wide thing and everybody can eat at Runza on April 2 and a portion of the proceeds go to help our program.”

The mentors and mentees with Wayne Teammates are planning a group event to visit Ponca State Park. The date will be Saturday, April 13.

Walling would like to thank the community and school for their support.

“People support the program,” Walling mentioned. “If they’re not able to be a mentor themselves they’re usually willing to give a monetary donation and all that helps grow the program and helps it succeed. It’s just wonderful that as a community we can come together to support these kids.”
