Reports Heard, Bids Approved During School Board Meeting

WAYNE – The final Wayne Community Schools Board of Education meeting before graduation took place as several high school seniors were in attendance Monday evening.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School library, room 407, board members took care of their April business getting prepared for the next school year.

The hiring of Mark Evetovich as assistant elementary principal/district assessment coordinator was approved for the 2019-20 school year. Evetovich previously served the past four years as principal at Walthill, according to Dr. Mark Lenihan.

“Prior to that he was the lead teacher at St. Mary’s here in Wayne,” said Lenihan. “He also served two terms on the Wayne school board. So, he’ll come in with some great experience and I know he’s very excited to be working here in Wayne next year.”

Misty Beair, current SPED director, will take over the elementary SPED position with Tucker Hight moving into the high school principal position for Mark Hanson who will be retiring at the end of the school year.

Elementary principal Russ Plager gave a MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) report. The levels include literacy, behavior and math. The group is in their third year of literacy going through the process of critical content and will be training for behavior this June.

Mr. Hight also gave an update to the board on the English Learners Program on how students qualify and goals.

Bids approvals went to a two-year HVAC maintenance from Trane for $16,000 annually and chromebooks for 8th and 9th grade students for $48,194.85 through Sterling Account Manager.

Dr. Lenihan added now all ninth graders will receive a chromebook that they’ll be able to use throughout their four years.

“Throughout high school they pay a $25 fee per year,” Lenihan added. “So, it’s their chromebook; they do turn it back in over the summer. Then when they graduate high school now, they are actually able to take that chromebook with them.”

A list of 71 recommended seniors (two foreign exchange students) were accepted for graduation taking place on Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m. from Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College. The last day for seniors at Wayne High is May 7 while all other students will be let out at noon on May 21. The final day for teachers is May 24 (flex day).

The board approved a project that will begin this summer in the high school to replace light fixtures with LED lights and get new ceiling tiles for the west entry, gym lobby and hallway along with all the upper level classrooms (eight).

Total cost from Otte Construction is $81,665. During the summer of 2020 the lower level will have their ceiling tiles replaced and new LED lights installed.

State wrestlers, state speech competitors and the academic team were then recognized during honor coffee following the meeting.

All are also invited to the Friday morning Chamber Coffee honoring the graduating seniors on April 26 at 10 a.m. from the lecture hall.

The next regularly scheduled Wayne Board of Education meeting will be Monday, May 13 at 5 p.m. Board members are welcome to attend the Early Learning Center graduation following the meeting at 7 p.m. in the Jr/Sr Lecture Hall.
