Public Health Officials Issue Notice To Parents, Guardians Of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Students About A Possible Case Of Mumps

LAUREL – A possible case of mumps is being reported within a northeast Nebraska school district.

According to a release on the lccschool.org website on Monday, the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department (NNPHD) is providing guidance to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Schools regarding a case of mumps. This is not yet confirmed but health officials want to let everyone know about the possible presence.

Extra precautions are being taken at the school when it comes to classroom education and cleaning practices.

Antibiotics are not a treatment option because mumps is a viral infection. But it may be helpful to treat the symptoms, such as pain and fever, with over the counter medications. All cases of suspected mumps need to be reported to Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department by calling 402-375-2200 or 402-375-2260.

Public health officials are also encouraging the school district to be proactive, communicate concerns with family physicians and take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this and other viruses.

People who are possibly sick with mumps need to stay home and away from others until five days after the swelling in the face and neck begins. If the swelling continues after that time, continue to stay home until the swelling is gone. Call the health department with any questions.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge school personnel have, and will continue to take these precautions in preventing the spread of illness.
