PONCA – With the weekend quickly approaching, Ponca State Park will continue their summer events for families.
According to a release, introductory courses open each morning from 9 – 11 a.m.
Thursday’s will focus on the .22 rifle for those 10 and older with adult supervision as cost is $3 per 10 rounds.
Weekend introduction courses will feature the pellet rifle on Friday for those eight and older with adult supervision ($1/four clips); archery on Saturday for those five and older with adult supervision ($1/six arrows) and slingshot on Sunday for those five and older with adult supervision ($1/30 rocks).
All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.
Thursday events start with ‘Soap Carving’ from 1 – 2:30 p.m. Carving is one of our oldest crafts as this ancient task can help facilitate an understanding of the form and function of animals, plants and simple objects by visualizing and finding its form in the simplest of objects. Join a Ponca State Park naturalist during ‘Soap Carving’ in this carving world of creativity, relaxation, fun and satisfaction as well as more than 11,000 years of tradition. Carve a small animal, plant or summer object in a bar of soap and take it home with you.
Pre-register and pay for the ‘Soap Carving’ event at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. then meet behind the center at 1 p.m. as cost is $2 per kit.
Close out Thursday night with a full moon hike starting at 8:30 p.m. Plan on joining a Ponca State Park naturalist on the Corps of Discovery trail. Participants will explore the night sky and learn about the August Full Sturgeon Moon. A red headlamp or flashlight is recommended. The trail is listed as moderate to difficult and approximately 1.5 miles long. Plan on meeting at the Riverfront playground for this free event.
Critter Corner will highlight Friday afternoon from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more including hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event which will include a chance to meet some of the resident critters at Ponca State Park.
Close Friday with ‘Gonna Find Me a Bluebird’ between 3 – 3:45 p.m. Participants will learn about the bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Park goers will discuss bluebird life, history and habitat needs while inspecting bluebird boxes, observe nests, eggs as well as both adult and young birds. Meet near the bridge in the Riverfront Campground for this free event which will also feature plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes.
Saturday’s lone event will be highlighted by trees of Ponca State Park. Join a park naturalist from 1 – 1:45 p.m. on a short hike through the park woodlands. Participants will learn the history of this forested area and discuss the various species of trees that grow here. Make sure to examine the old oak tree, native trees and invasive species that are in the area. Meet at the old oak tree staircase for this free event and dress for the weather and trail conditions.
Other events include Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike, Fishing Tackle Loaner Program and Beginner Mountain Bike Trail (located behind campsite G8).
