PONCA – More fun for the family is being scheduled at Ponca State Park this weekend.
According to a release, open each morning with an introductory course.
Saturday morning will offer an introduction to shotguns from 9 – 11 a.m. Cost is $7 for a box of 25 shells and available for those 12 and older with adult supervision.
Then on Sunday, join Ponca State Park for intro to the slingshot. Cost is $1 per 30 rocks and for those five and older with adult supervision.
All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.
Moving into Saturday afternoon, ‘A Meandering River’ will be highlighted from 1 -2 p.m. where visitors will take a short (roughly one-mile) walk along the banks of the Missouri River exploring flows, sandbars, backwaters, vegetation and evidence of fish and wildlife. Parkgoers will discuss the history of the Missouri River and its importance to the region and nation. Meet in the Backwaters parking lot for this free event to explore the dynamic changes and manipulations that have occurred in history.
Then from 3 – 3:45 p.m., lean how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the un-digestible material, being the owl pellet during the ‘Owl Pellets’ activity. Attendees will be given an owl pellet to investigate, dissect and ID. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and meet behind the Center later in the day as cost is $2 per kit.
Close out Saturday by joining a National Park Service Ranger as the group will hike the Old Oak Trail while learning about the flora, fauna and history of the Missouri River Corridor at 4 p.m. The trail is easy to moderate and approximately 1.25 miles in length. Meet at the west shelter for this free event.
Other events include Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike, Fishing Tackle Loaner Program and Beginner Mountain Bike Trail (located behind campsite G8).
