PONCA – A trio of introduction courses along with more hands-on activities will be showcased at Ponca State Park this weekend.

According to a release, join Ponca State Park officials for an introductory course on pellet rifles between 9 – 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15. Participants must be eight and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 per four clips.

Other weekend 9 – 11 a.m. introduction courses include archery on Saturday, July 16 for those five and older with adult supervision (cost $1 per six arrows) and slingshot on Sunday, July 17 for those five and older with adult supervision (cost $1 per 30 rocks).

All equipment is provided and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

Friday’s afternoon activity will feature ‘Critter Corner’ from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more including hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event which will include a chance to meet some of the resident critters at Ponca State Park.

Moving further into Friday from 3 – 3:45 p.m. will be ‘Tracks and Traces’. A Ponca State Park naturalist will talk more about track identification, the animals that live around the park and then visitors will create their own track to take home. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. then meet behind the Center as cost is $2 per kit.

Close out Friday night by grabbing your friends and family for a fun night of nature themed trivia. Prizes, dollar popcorn and memories will be created. Meet in the Riverfront Conference Room for this free event.

Saturday’s afternoon event will feature a ‘Build Your Own Bird Feeder’. Participants will learn about some of the common backyard birds at Ponca State Park. Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home for $1 per kit. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 – 11:30 a.m. before meeting behind the Center from noon until 12:45 p.m.

A ‘Paracord Keychain’ is a small piece of rope and will help you survive. Learn the techniques and strategy of using a keychain made from paracord between 3 – 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will weave their own keychain to take home. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. before meeting behind the center at 3 p.m. Cost is $2 per kit.

Other events include Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike, Fishing Tackle Loaner Program and Beginner Mountain Bike Trail (located behind campsite G8).
