Ponca State Park Weekday Activities

PONCA – From introduction courses to afternoon activities, Ponca State Park will offer several weekday events for the entire family.

According to a release, open each morning with an introductory course from 9 – 11 a.m.

Archery will be Monday morning’s topic where park-goers will learn to shoot like Katniss or Robin Hood. Participants must be five and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 per six arrows.

Ponca State Park will introduce you to tomahawk and atlatl on Tuesday. Visitors must by eight and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 for six throws while introduction to muzzleloader will be offered on Wednesday for those 12 and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 per two shots.

All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

Moving into Monday afternoon, ‘Towers in Time’ will last from 1 – 1:45 p.m. as park experts answer the questions why are they located near the entrance, what do they represent and who made them? Participants will examine and talk more about the three ‘towers’, the fountain, the stairway of falls and the reflecting pond. Learn more about the vision of the artists during the creation of this monument and discover the importance of art and the natural world by meeting in the ‘Towers in Time’ parking lot for this free event.

Close out Monday by creating your own fishing lure from 3 – 3:45 p.m. Colors, sizes and shapes all react differently under water. Visitors will learn how lures work to catch different species of fish and make their own out of everyday materials. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. as this event is recommended for ages six and up with adult supervision. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center at 3 p.m. as cost is $2 per kit.

Tuesday’s lone afternoon event will be highlighted by campfire cooking from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Attendees will learn fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking their very own snack. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before meeting at the west shelter at 1 p.m. Cost is $3 per kit.

A mid-week event taking place at Ponca State Park will feature pond macroinvertebrates between 1 – 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Join a park naturalist for water quality measurements as attendees will try and catch and identify the small creatures that live in the Ponca Pond. Meet at the Ponca Pond for this free event.

Other events include Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike, Fishing Tackle Loaner Program and Beginner Mountain Bike Trail (located behind campsite G8).
