Ponca State Park Weekday Activities

PONCA – Plan on making a trip to Ponca State Park for several weekday activities.

According to a release begin each morning with an introductory course.

Monday’s event will focus on shotguns from 9 – 11 a.m. Participants must be 12 and older with adult supervision as cost is $7 for a box of 25 shells.

Other introduction courses from 9 – 11 a.m. will feature archery on Tuesday for those five and older (cost is $1 per six arrows) and then muzzleloaders for those 12 and older on Wednesday (cost is $1 per two shots).

All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

Monday afternoon events will include the ‘Fossil Hunt’ from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Learn about the ancient creatures that lived near the Missouri River and how fossils are formed. Meet at the Riverfront Boat Ramp to search for fossils near the riverfront during this free event.

Later in the afternoon from 3 – 3:45 p.m., join a park naturalist to discuss the ins and outs of the pollinator world and then create your very own one of a kind pipe cleaner pollinator. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. before meeting behind the center at 3 p.m. as cost is $1 per kit.

Looking into Tuesday’s event, ‘Fishing 101’ will be the topic from 1 – 2:30 p.m. Participants are invited to bring their own pole or borrow one. If you’re new to fishing or are just looking for some tips of the trade, Ponca State Park staff will be available to help. All anglers 16 and older must have a fishing permit. Meet at the Ponca Pond for this free event.

‘Watercolor Wonders’ will be another activity made for the entire family. Between 3 – 3:45 p.m. join a naturalist and learn about watercolors and paint with the beauty of Ponca State Park. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event.

Moving into midweek events, ‘Tracks and Traces’ will begin Wednesday at 1 p.m. and last until 1:45 p.m. Learn about track identification, the animals that live around Ponca State Park and then create your own track to take home. Pre-register between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Resource and Education Center before meeting at the Center at 1 p.m. as cost is $2 per kit.

Also, ‘Build Your Own Bird Feeder’ between 3 – 3:45 p.m. Participants will learn about some of the common backyard birds at Ponca State Park. Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home for $1 per kit. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before meeting behind the Center at 3 p.m.

Other events include Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike, Fishing Tackle Loaner Program and Beginner Mountain Bike Trail (located behind campsite G8).
