PONCA – More introductory courses will be offered along with afternoon activities at Ponca State Park.
According to a release, introduction to atlatl will last from 9 – 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 1 for those eight and older with adult supervision as cost is $1 per six throws.
Other weekend introduction courses will be for the tomahawk on Friday (eight+ with adult supervision, $1/six arrows); shotguns on Saturday (12+ with adult supervision, $7/box of 25 shells); slingshot on Sunday (five+ with adult supervision, $1/30 rocks) and introduction to archery on Labor Day Monday, September 5 (five+ with adult supervision, $1/six arrows).
All equipment is provided, and park goers are invited to meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.
Moving into Thursday afternoon Ponca State Park will highlight ‘Backyard Birds’ from 1 – 2:30 p.m. Park goers will learn tips and tricks to brining a variety of birds to your yard. Join a naturalist to watch the birds visiting Ponca State Park feeders while learning about their characteristics. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event.
Friday’s lone afternoon event will allow participants to make their own fishing lure between 1 – 1:45 p.m. Colors, sizes and shapes all react differently under water. Visitors will learn how lures work to catch different species of fish and make their own out of everyday materials. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. as this event is recommended for ages six and up with adult supervision. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center at 1 p.m. on Friday as cost is $2 per kit.
Getting into the weekend on Saturday, visitors will be able to examine some tools and other items carried by Lewis & Clark and the Crops. Of Discovery while in the vicinity of Ponca State Park in 1804. Meet at the Riverfront Campground at 1 p.m. for this free event to hear some of the descriptions of the fish and wildlife they observed and learn about some of the obstacles they encountered.
Critter Corner will then be offered at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more including hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event which will include a chance to meet some of the resident critters at Ponca State Park.
The Sunday afternoon event being highlighted at Ponca State Park will be ‘Campfire Cooking’ at 1 p.m. Attendees will learn fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking their very own snack. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before meeting at the west shelter at 1 p.m. Cost is $3 per kit.
‘Wildlife Calls and Calling’ will be showcased on Monday, September 5 at 1 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn about the different wildlife around Ponca State Park as well as the calls used to communicate. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event to hear turkey clucks, deer antler rattlers, duck quacks, bird songs and more.
