PONCA – Over the next three days plan on joining Ponca State Park for a series of introductory courses and afternoon events.
Located on the banks of the Missouri River north of Ponca, Ponca State Park always offers great activities for the entire family.
Friday, July 26 will begin with an introduction to archery from 9 until 11 a.m. All equipment is provided as participants must be five years old or older and cost is $1 per six arrows. Other introduction courses will be for archery and shotguns Saturday from 9 until 11 a.m. (cost is $1 per six arrows/$7 per box of shells) and tomahawk & atlatl on Sunday from 9 until 11 a.m. (cost is $1 per six arrows). Minimum age requirements for shotgun is 12 years and eight years of age for Sunday’s courses.
Friday’s lone afternoon event will feature pizza and outdoor cooking at 2:30 p.m. Preregister and meet at the Resource and Education Center as cost is $3 per treat and limited to 25 people.
Moving into Saturday, Ponca State Park’s most popular program “Critter Corner” is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and offered for all ages. Participants will be able to see and touch live critters, furs, feathers, shells, skulls and more during this free event at the Resource and Education Center.
Backwater kayaking is scheduled for 1:30 and 3:15 p.m. limited to 12 per session. Parkgoers will be able to learn the basic skills of kayaking in an “off-river” backwater area. Cost is $15 per person as kayakers will also be able to fine-tune their skills while touring the backwater area and viewing wildlife.
Other Saturday afternoon activities will feature “Survival Dilemmas” (limited to 30 people) at 2:30 p.m. and “Paddlewheelers” at 3:30 p.m. both free at the Resource and Education Center.
With it being National Moth Week, make plans to attend a Saturday evening event at 8 p.m. Moths and butterflies have beautiful wings and are great pollinators. Meet at the Resource and Education Center for this free event.
