Ponca State Park To Celebrate Earth Day With Weekend Activities

PONCA – Take and go activity bags continue to be available at the Resource and Education Center all month long for $1 each at Ponca State Park.

According to a release, weekend events will be held on Saturday, April 23.

From 10 – 11 a.m., ‘A Meandering River’ will celebrate Earth Day during a roughly one-mile walk along the banks of the Missouri River. Attendees will explore flows, sandbars, backwaters, vegetation and evidence of fish as well as wildlife. The group will also discuss the history of the Missouri river and its importance to the region and nation. Meet in the Backwaters parking lot for this free event to explore the dynamic changes and manipulations that have occurred in history.

Moving into the afternoon, the ever popular ‘Critter Corner’ event will last from 11:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more including hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event which will include a chance to meet some of the resident critters at Ponca State Park.

Closing out Saturday will be ‘Fishing 101’ from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Guests can bring their own fishing pole or borrow one. For those who are new to fishing or are just looking for some tips of the trade, Ponca State Park officials will be available to help you. All anglers ages 16 and older must have a fishing permit. Meet at the Ponca Pond for this free event.

Make sure to save the date of Sunday, May 8 for the Ponca State Park Mother’s Day Buffet serving from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. RSVP to enjoy a meal celebrating Mother’s and then explore Ponca State Park.

Other activities put on at Ponca State Park include the Spring Egg Hunt (Whitetail Trail Self-guided Hike); bingos/scavenger hunts/passports; search for sasquatch; Ponca packs and the Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike.
