WAYNE – Ponca State Park is happy to be able to host programs again. There are limited programs and spots for those programs available. Also, all programs must be pre-registered for at the Resource and Education Center or by calling ahead to 402-755-2284. Sign up begins at 8 a.m. the day of the program and closes 30 minutes before the program’s start time. For events that have a cost, pay at the Resource and Education Center.
There are three programs on tap at Ponca State Park for Friday, July 24. Introduction to slingshot will be back. Sign up for the early session from 9 – 9:45 a.m. or from 10:15 – 11 a.m. All equipment will be provided for this $3 per shooter program. Shooters must be five years or older to participate. Intro to slingshot will meet at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex. From 1 – 2 p.m. or from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. there will be a fossil hunt program. Participants will look for fossils along the riverfront and learn about dinosaurs and other amazing creatures. Meet at the riverfront parking lot for this free event. From 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. or from 5:45 – 6:30 p.m. there’s a campfire cooking class being taught. Chefs will learn how to cook s’mores, campfire toast, popcorn, food on a stick, and more. Meet at the West Shelter for this $3 per kit program.
The park will run four programs for Saturday, July 25. Archery will be from 9 – 9:45 or from 10:15 – 11 a.m. Equipment will be provided for this introductory class. This costs $3 per shooter and they will meet at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex. Participants must be eight years or older and if between ages eight and twelve, they must have an adult with them. The Oreo Moon Phases program will take place from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. or from 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. Learn about why the moon’s shape changes from our Earth view utilizing Oreos. This is recommended for ages five and older. Meet at the pollinator garden on the east side of the Resource and Education Center for this program that costs $3 per craft. Learn about owl puke with the Owl Puke Program. This will run from 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. or from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Participants will dissect an owl pellet. This is recommended for ages six and older. Meet at the West Shelter for this $3 per kit program. From noon – 12:45 p.m. or from 1:15 – 2 p.m. the Critter Corner program will occur. This will present what wildlife is found along the Missouri River and is recommended for all ages. Meet near the pollinator garden on the east side of the Resource and Education Center for this free program.
Sunday, July 26, has two events available at Ponca State Park. From 9 – 9:45 a.m. or from 10:15 – 11 a.m. there will be an introduction to atlatl lesson. Participants must be eight years or older. All equipment will be provided. Meet at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex for this $3 per shooter program. Recommended for ages six and older is the Mighty Mosquito program. This will be available from noon – 2 p.m. Each year Ponca State Park and the Department of Health and Human Services partner for mosquito research. Learn about the research in this interactive graphic novel that can be picked up at the Activity Shed on the northwest corner of the Resource and Education Center, while supplies last.
