Ponca State Park October 22 – 24 Activities

PONCA – More activities continue to take over a northeast Nebraska State Park.

According to a release from Ponca State Park, take and go activity bags are available at the Resource and Education Center all month long for $1 each.

Getting into weekend events, close out Friday evening by enjoying the sights and sounds of nature during ‘Night Journal’ from 7 – 7:45 p.m. while overlooking the Missouri National Recreation River. Take a walk or find a place to sit with your family and observe while journaling with a park naturalist. Meet at the Tri-State Overlook Amphitheatre for this free event.

Getting into a jam-packed Saturday, ‘Batty About Bats’ will open the day from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. to celebrate Bat Week. A park naturalist will explain why bats are so important to our ecosystem and what you can do to help them. This event is free and will take place behind the Resource and Education Center.

Also, make sure to pre-register at the R&EC between 8 – 10:30 a.m. for ‘Firecraft’. Meet at the West Shelter from 11 – 11:45 a.m. for this activity that will cover the basics of starting a fire with primitive tools in dry and wet conditions. Participants will get the opportunity to build their own fire using gathered materials and create their own fire starter. Cost is $2 per kit and is recommended for ages six and up with parental supervision.

Guests will also get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more during the popular ‘Critter Corner’ event from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Join a park naturalist to learn more about Nebraska’s wildlife during this free event by meeting behind the R&EC.

Just like taking part in an evening event to open the weekend, close out the weekend with a ‘Sunrise Hike on Overlook Trail’ Sunday morning form 7 – 9:30 a.m. See the sunrise over the Missouri River with a park naturalist and enjoy the sights of Oak Woodlands while traveling along the blufftops. This trail is approximately 1.2-miles and is listed as easy to moderate. Meet at the parking lot near cabins 13 and 14 for this free event.

Other activities at Ponca State Park continue to be bingo/scavenger hunts and passports; search for sasquatch; themed backpacks for all ages; Old Oak trail self-guided hike and the Backwaters Trail gnome hunt.
