Wednesday’s afternoon activity will be ‘A Meandering River’ from 3 – 4 p.m. where visitors will take a short (roughly one-mile) walk along the banks of the Missouri River exploring flows, sandbars, backwaters, vegetation and evidence of fish and wildlife. Parkgoers will discuss the history of the Missouri River and its importance to the region and nation. Meet in the Backwaters parking lot for this free event to explore the dynamic changes and manipulations that have occurred in history.

Moving into Thursday between 1 – 2 p.m., ‘Prairie Walk’ will be highlighted. Tallgrass prairie is the most endangered community on the planet. A park naturalist will lead a short hike through the tall grasses and wildflowers of a restored native tallgrass prairie. Visitors will discover some of the plants that occurred here for thousands of years from the time of the glaciers to the coming of modern man. Attendees will also explore some of the uses Native Americans had for certain plants and discuss some of the things to do to conserve prairies in the region.

Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for hiking in grassland. Mosquitos, gnats and other insects may be bothersome. Also, water and binoculars are recommended. The hike is approximately one mile and easy on flat ground. Meet at the backwater parking lot for this free event.

With this week being Pollinator Week, Ponca State Park visitors will be able to build their own pollinator from 3 – 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Join a park naturalist to discuss the ins and outs of the pollinator world and then create your very own one of a kind pipe cleaner pollinator. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. before meeting behind the center at 3 p.m. as cost is $1 per kit.
