PONCA – A full list of events are scheduled at Ponca State Park this weekend and into Labor Day.
Opening Saturday, August 31 will be an introduction to archery and shotguns from 9-11 a.m. All equipment is provided as archery participants must be five years old or older and shotgun participants 12 years and up. Cost is $1 per six arrows and $7 per a box of shells for shotguns.
Moving into the afternoon, the popular critter corner is back at 11:30 a.m. This program provides a snapshot of the wildlife found along the Missouri River. Those who attend will be able to see and touch live critters, furs, feathers, shells and more. Meet at the Resource and Education Center for this free event.
Several backwater kayaking opportunities will be held at 11:30 a.m.; 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Learn the basic skills of kayaking in an “off-river” backwater area and fine-tune your skills. Each session is limited to 10 people with a cost of $15 each and minimum age limit of 12 years old.
Other Saturday afternoon events will be “Nature’s Paperweights” at 2 p.m. and “Fall Bass Fishing” at 3:30 p.m. Closing out the evening will feature hayrack tours at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Maximum of 25 people allowed each ride as cost is $5 per adults and $3 for kids with those five and younger free.
More introduction courses for slingshots (Sunday) and .22 rifles (Monday) will be held from 9-11 a.m. Participants must be at least five years old for slingshots and 10 years of age for .22 rifles with cost being $1 per 30 rocks Sunday and $3 per 10 rounds on Labor Day.
Sunday afternoon will also feature a “Butterfly Safari” at 1:30 p.m. and “Pizza Bites Dutch Oven Style” at 3 p.m.
Closing out the Labor Day activities on Monday, a free “Migration Headache” will be held at 1 p.m. and then a “Walking Sticks” session at 3:30 p.m.
