PONCA – Celebrate the Fourth of July weekend at Ponca State Park with activities for the entire family.

According to a release from Ponca State Park, events will begin on Friday, July 2 with an introduction to pellet rifles from 9 – 11 a.m. Participants must be eight years of age or older with adult supervision. All equipment will be provided as cost is $1 for four clips.

From 1 – 2 p.m., you’ll be able to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend learning about a bald eagle of their life, habitat, history and other fun facts. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event. Then, close out Friday by learning the basics of starting a fire with primitive tools in dry and wet conditions. Pre-register for this event and meet at the west shelter as this event is recommended for those age six and older with parent supervision with the cost being $2 per kit.

Moving into Saturday, the start the day off with an introduction to shotguns from 9 – 11 a.m. All equipment is provided as you must be 12 years or older with adult supervision. Cost is $7 per box.

Join a Ponca State Park naturalist between 1 – 1:45 p.m. for ‘Critter Corner’. Park goers will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more during this free event behind the Resource and Education Center.

‘Fireworks in a Jar’ will then last from 2 – 2:45 p.m. where three simple ingredients will be combined together and dissolve into tiny explosions. This activity is made for all junior scientists. Cost is $1 per kit. Saturday will come to an end with ‘Knot Tying’ from 3 – 3:45 p.m. A naturalist will guide you through a set of useful knots for fishing, shelter building and everyday use. Cost is $1 per kit.

Sunday, July 4 will be Independence Day as Ponca State Park will open their weekend activities from 9 – 11 a.m. with introduction to slingshot. Age recommendation is five and up with adult supervision as cost is $1 per 30 rocks.

Moving into the afternoon, learn about track identification, the animals that live around Ponca State Park and then create your own track to take home. The event will last from 2 – 2:45 p.m. with cost being $2 per kit.

Campfire cooking will then conclude the weekend from 4 – 4:45 p.m. Learn fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking your very own snack. Cost is $3 per kit.
