WAYNE – Ponca State Park is excited to host some educational and recreational programming for their visitors this weekend. All programs must be pre-registered for. To register, call or visit the park office. The park office’s phone number is 402-755-2284. Registration begins at 8 a.m. the day of the event and closes 30 minutes before the start of the event. Most activities have two sessions available for registration. For the events that have minimal costs, pay for those at the Resource and Education Center. There are limited slots available for each activity.
The park has three events planned for Friday, August 7. From 9 – 9:45 a.m. or from 10:15 – 11 a.m. “Introduction to Slingshot” will occur. All equipment is provided and shooters must be five years or older. This will cost $3 per shooter. Participants will meet at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex. “Nature’s Paint” is an activity offered from 1 – 1:45 p.m. or from 2:15 – 3 p.m. At this program, participants will walk to collect natural materials, then paint a landscape or animal. “Nature’s Paint” is recommended for ages five and up. Meet near the bird feeders behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event. “Campfire Cooking” will run from 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. or from 4:45 – 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to cook s’mores, campfire toast, popcorn, food on a stick, and more all over an open fire. This costs $3 per kit. They will meet at the West Shelter for this activity.
Saturday, August 8, is full of fun programs. From 9 – 10 a.m. or from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. will be an introduction to archery class. All equipment will be provided. Participants must be eight years or older (children ages 8 – 12 require a parent present). This program costs $5 per shooter. They will meet at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex. “The Wonder of Butterflies” will go from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. or from 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. At this program, people will learn about butterflies and create their own magnet. This is recommended for ages seven and older. Meet at the West Shelter for this free event. “Critter Corner” is from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. or from 1:45 – 2:30 p.m. At Critter Corner people will get a snapshot of wildlife along the Missouri River. This is recommended for all ages. Meet near the pollinator garden on the east side of the Resource and Education Center for this free event. Lastly for Saturday, “Busy Bee” will run from 1 – 1:45 p.m. or from 2:15 – 3 p.m. Busy Bee will creatively teach people the process of pollination. This is recommended for ages five and older and is free of cost. Meet at the West Shelter for Busy Bee.
There are two activities on the schedule for Sunday, August 9. First, will be another week of “Introduction to Atlatl” This will be offered from 9 – 9:45 a.m. or from 10:15 – 11 a.m. All equipment will be provided. Participants must be eight years or older. This program costs $3 per shooter. Finally, from noon – 2 p.m., Ponca Passports are available for pick up at the Activity Shed on the northwest corner of the Resource and Education Center. This is recommended for ages five and up. Passports allow users to explore the park.
