PONCA – Make plans to visit Ponca State Park this weekend for upcoming activities.

According to a release, take and go activity bags are available at the Resource and Education Center for $1 each.

Saturday, April 2 will open with ‘Bald Eagles’ from 10 – 11 a.m. where participants can look to the sky and they might find an eagle soaring high. Bald Eagles life, habitat, history and other fun facts will be presented. Following a short hike on a level trail, the group will observe an eagles nest and search for the nesting pair at Ponca State Park. Meet at the Backwaters parking lot for this free event.

Moving into Saturday afternoon from 1 – 2 p.m., ‘Gobblers Galore’ will be highlighted talking about tom and jake turkeys. Parkgoers will be able to learn about the turkey life, history, habitat, coloration and other turkey trivia. The group will try and observe tom turkeys strut and posture. Meet in front of the Resource and Education Center for this free event.

Campfire cooking will then close out the afternoon from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees will learn fire safety and tools of the trade before preparing their own snack over an open fire. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday and meet at the West Shelter as cost is $3 per kit.

Make sure to save the date of Saturday, April 16 for the Ponca State Park Spring Eggstravaganza. Plan on joining the fun with spring activities, animals, egg hunts, candy and more.

Other activities put on at Ponca State Park include the Spring Egg Hunt (Whitetail Trail Self-guided Hike); bingos/scavenger hunts/passports; search for sasquatch; Ponca packs and the Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike.

 

Also following a mild winter season, it was very difficult for people to participate in the Creative Snow Building Contest. Two individuals were able to construct their snow creation.

First snowman of 2021-22 season, Small but Mighty by Grace Freeman from Vermillion, SD.

The official first day of spring was March 19 which concluded with Grace Freeman from Vermillion, South Dakota taking second place with her ‘Small But Mighty Baby Snowman’ and Evan Petersen from Roca, Nebraska with his snowman ‘Molecule & Snow Snake Slithering’ earning first place.
