Northeast’s Dr. Chipps Sets Retirement Date

NORFOLK, NE — Dr. Michael Chipps’ tenure as Northeast Community College President will end in the next month.

Northeast announced in a news release Wednesday that Dr. Chipps will retire May 31.  He said he would retire by the end of the year in an announcement in March.

The release says the Board of Governors believe the end of the academic year is the ideal time to move forward to fill the president’s position.

“Dr. Chipps has finalized his plans for his last official day serving as president to be May 31, 2019. We certainly appreciate his desire to move the process forward,” said Steve Anderson, of Concord, board chair. “The goal of the Board of Governors is to recognize and honor Dr. Chipps’ stellar 40-year career in higher education. Conversely, as we are about to close another academic year, it is prudent for us as a board to begin the search for our next president.”

Anderson says interim leadership will take over on June 1.  The Board of Governors is working to find the next president.

Chipps started as Northeast president in February of 2012. Since then Northeast has added eight different athletic programs and added a number of new facilities including the extended campus building in O’Neill and the Nielsen Career and Technical Center in West Point which will hold a ribbon-cutting next month.

Doctor Chipps came to Northeast from Mid-Plains Community College and has served more than 40 years as a college administrator with other stops in Grand Island and Hastings.

A public reception to celebrate Chipps’ career will be held following the Board of Governors’ next meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2019. It will be held from 2-5 p.m., in the Hawks Point Dining Facility on the Norfolk campus. In order to accommodate the reception, the start time for the board’s regular meeting has been moved from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m. on May 9, in the College Welcome Center.
