Northeast Recognized By Aspen Institute As Top 150 Community Colleges

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College was recently listed among the top 150 community colleges in the nation.

According to a release from the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, NECC located in Norfolk is now eligible for the one-million-dollar Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This prize is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges

Based on strong and improving student outcomes – including in learning, completion rates, employment rates and earnings as well as equity – 15 percent of community colleges nationwide have been invited to apply for the Aspen Prize. Data shows that over the last two years, student retention, graduation rates and degree completion have improved at the top tier of 150 Aspen Prize-eligible colleges.

The 150 community colleges named as eligible to compete for the 2021 Prize were selected from a pool of over 1,100 public two-year colleges nationwide using publicly available data on student outcomes. Located in 39 states in urban, rural and suburban areas, serving as few as 500 students and as many as 75,000 students, these colleges represent the diversity and depth of the community college sector.

Northeast Community College has been recognized by the Aspen Institute in the past. Being named as a Top 120 institution in 2011, Top 120 in 2013, a Top 10 college in 2017 and Top 150 in 2019.
