NORFOLK — It may not be raining on their parade, but it sure is snowing on their prom.
Due to an unseasonal April blizzard, many schools across the area are moving their proms.
Norfolk Catholic High School is just one of those affected. Activities Director Shane Anderson says the decision to move prom was made with the safety of the students in mind.
“Student safety is the biggest thing,” Anderson said. “We wanted to make sure that we could get our kids to prom safe and the more importantly coming home late at night after post prom . Typically for us those activities typically get over for us at three in the morning. The transportation part of our kids was the biggest part of our concern.”
It was a decision that the the student body helped to make.
“We bought most of our senior students in and talked to them about the different options that maybe we would have if we didn’t have it Saturday night so they helped us in the decision making of what would be the best thing for us to do,” Anderson said. “I think they are happy with the decision. They are just happy they are going to get a prom, thats the biggest thing for them.”
While their prom’s date may have been moved, the location remains the same, thanks to the Norfolk Country Club. General Manager Gil Russell knows just how much this night means to the kids.
“Prom is a big event for high school students, we just want to be supportive and make sure that we can take care of them when they show up,” Russell said.
Russell not only views it as a great opportunity to help the kids, but to give back to the community as a whole.
“It’s just another opportunity for us to give back and be a part of the community,” Russell said.
Russell had one final message for the kids.
“We’ll get through the April snow and we’ll see you guys in a week.”
