Nomination Letters For Wayne County Heroes Due By Friday, Awards Presentation For May 4

WAYNE – For the second straight year heroes have been nominated in Wayne County by current and previous residents.

Mrs. Johnson’s English class at Wayne High School would like to celebrate the people who live or work in Wayne County that have made a difference in the lives of others.

Stacy Johnson is in her third year as the 7-12 Special Education teacher. Mrs. Johnson said the Wayne County Heroes event is about recognizing the people in someone’s life that have gotten them to where they’re today.

“Everyone kind of struggles at times,” said Johnson. “There always seems to be at least one person, sometimes more, that has pushed you to get through those tough times. Maybe not in huge ways, but just small things that they did that helped you get through.”

Community members have been sending in their letters explaining why the person they’re nominating has been a hero to them or others. In the letter needs to be the hero’s name, address and phone number (if known), explanation why they are a hero and your name.

The only rule is that the person being nominated needs to either live in Wayne County OR work in Wayne County. There is still time to send new letters in for Wayne County Heroes. Those interested have until Friday, April 13 to email them to stjohns1@waynebluedevils.org.

Mrs. Johnson already has in her lesson plan for Monday, April 16 to go through all of the letters.

“The students will go through them; practice reading them,” Johnson added. “Then they’ll be contacting each person that was nominated via telephone and they will be letting them know that they’ve been nominated, and they will let them know when the ceremony is going to be.”

As of Thursday, there were 12-15 letters sent in which has been a little more than the first year in 2017.

The awards will be presented on Friday, May 4 during the Spring Sprints Awards ceremony at the Wayne Junior/Senior High School with a time to be announced at a later date. Everyone that has been nominated will be recognized.

Freshman Silas Mark and G.W. Robinson designed the flyer, went around to businesses to place flyers and will read some of the letters.

“I just think that they can walk away from that with a huge sense of accomplishment,” Johnson mentioned. “They are also seeing the reactions of the hero’s that were nominated. I think that’s huge, that they see how they can impact other people and think about other people.”
