WAYNE – Community members, high school and college students attended the 27th annual Northeast Nebraska Legislative Forum featuring four senators and the speaker of the legislature.

Friday morning Chamber Coffee was co-hosted by the Government Affairs Committee and Wayne State College from Gardner Hall.

The “coffee” portion started right away at 10 a.m. in the atrium before moving into the auditorium for the Legislative Forum at 10:30 a.m.

Senators Joni Albrecht (District 17), Lydia Brasch (District 16), Speaker Jim Scheer (District 19), Paul Schumacker (District 22) and Mike Groene (District 42) were in attendance.

Luke Virgil is in his first full year as the Executive Director for Wayne Area Economic Development. He attended this legislative forum as a Student-Trustee with the State College System before.

“It was just good to understand the issues that are kind of dominating the conversation down in Lincoln during the session,” said Virgil. “And I hope that kids understand that the process is not quite as pie in the sky and easy as it might sound.”

Area high school students from Wayne, Wakefield, Winside and Ponca also sat in.

Former WAED Executive Director, current Wayne City Administrator, Wes Blecke was the moderator during the forum. He filed through the questions submitted via notecard to get through several topics in 90 minutes.

Virgil added a few thank you’s to the senators and WSC

“Friday is a recess day, so they don’t really have to work, but this does kind of qualify as work,” Virgil added. “I know a lot of times enjoy it, but we do really appreciate them coming up. I think from our point here at the Chamber Office, we need to thank Wayne State College. Their staff has done a tremendous amount of work as far as the logistics of getting this pulled together.”

Also, the community is invited to a local candidate forum on Tuesday, May 8 from the Wayne Senior Center. All the local candidates whether they are running in the primary, mid-term or general election will be invited to let the public know more about them.

The Nebraska Primary election is the following Tuesday, Mary 15.
