LINCOLN – Nebraska’s annual First Day Hikes are a great opportunity to explore the state’s numerous trails. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is encouraging people to take self-guided hikes this year from January 1 to January 3. Normally, there would tours and hot chocolate, but some parks may offer treasure hunts and selfie stations on certain trails.

This is the 100th year of Nebraska state parks.

Make sure to check weather reports before going hiking. Dress for the weather if choosing to hike. Also, never go hiking alone.

Hikers should tag @NEGameandParks in their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram posts. Also, the hashtag #NEParks100 allows for a chance to be included in the commission’s social streams.

The Game and Parks Commission reminded hikers to follow local health guidelines. Stay 6-feet away from other hikers and only hike within a household.
