Nebraska consumers urged to be aware of skimmer devices

Nebraska officials are reminding consumers to pay special attention at the gas pump over the Memorial Day weekend.

Credit card skimmer devices have been found in the past by state officials during routine pump inspections.

Skimming and shimming devices can be attached to ATMs, gas pumps and other places where people swipe their credit and debit cards. Officials said criminals use the devices to steal financial information.

Some skimmer devices are embedded inside pumps, officials said, while card-shimming devices are placed over the external card reader on gas pumps.

Consumers were urged to:

— Choose a gas pump nearest to a attendant.

— Look for a tamper proof, serial-numbered piece of tape over the pump access panels. If the tape is damaged, do not use the pump.

— Monitor your financial accounts frequently and report any unauthorized charges.
