FREMONT – July’s annual John C Fremont Days always has a historical bent to the festivities – from the costumed actors portraying the pioneering General John C Fremont and others to special displays like last year’s WW1 memorial. This year, the historical component will be much more recent.
Festival organizers announced that the festival will feature a large, interactive September 11th display and memorial. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, established in memory of a fallen 9/11 firefighter, created the “9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit” to bring the events, and the historical significance, of that day to Americans who are unable to travel to New York City to see the main museum & memorial. This memorial has never been brought to Nebraska before.
“The John C. Fremont Days Board of Directors is excited to bring the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit to John C. Fremont Days this summer,” said Don Cunningham, board president. “We are lucky to have such a wonderful exhibit that will help educate the younger generation, and honor the daily sacrifice that our first responders make.”
The exhibit will be trucked into Fremont with a police & fire honor escort from DC West High School in Valley, down highway 275 and into Fremont via Military Avenue to the exhibit’s place in John C Fremont Park on 8th & Main.
The “9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit” features everything from World Trade Center steel and an aluminum façade to audio tapes of the firefighters battling the fire. Also included are items like a panel of a fire truck and a golf ball that was found in the rubble. Tours through the exhibit will be free to the public, and are conducted by firefighters who were eyewitnesses to the devastation on 9-11 and in the days afterward.
The exhibit will be open 3PM to 9PM on Friday, July 12 and from 11AM to 5PM on Saturday, July 13. Final tours begin 15 minutes before closing time.
