Motorcycle Instructor Urges Pre-Ride Inspection

NEBRASKA CITY – With motorcycle fatalities reported in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri over the Memorial Day weekend, caution is being urged for both car and motorcycle drivers.

The Missouri State Patrol reports that a 23-year-old man that was reported missing was found dead where his motorcycle left a state highway in a rural area.

Two lives were lost near Waterloo, Iowa, when a car pulled in front of a motorcycle. The motorcyclist and a 20-year-old passenger in the car died.

Authorities say a 29-year-old Lincoln man was killed in an early morning motorcycle crash. The rider was ejected when the motorcycle left the roadway.

Nebraska City motorcycle safety instructor Keith Andrews said motorcycle skills are perishable and urged caution as riders return to the road after winter.

Andrews: “A pre-ride inspection of the motorcycle is critical to make sure all the controls and components are working properly. Also do a pre-ride on you, the rider, making sure you are sober and your reflexes are sharp.

“Also practicing your quick stop manuevers, cornering and braking and also scanning ahead, looking for potential hazards.”

In 2016, motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.
