Middle-School Aged Performers To Present Disney’s The Lion King Jr. June 25-26

WAYNE – Make plans to take in the experience of talented middle-school aged performers this weekend.

According to a release from Wayne Community School Vocal Music teacher, Tracy Anderson, Disney’s ‘The Lion King JR’ will take to the stage at Ramsey Theatre on the campus of Wayne State College on Friday and Saturday, June 25 – 26.

The 60-minute musical is based on the Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor and the 1994 Disney film. The cast contains approximately 18 students led by Melissa Derechailo and Anderson.

With the COVID restrictions lifting, Anderson could sense a real creative drive in the middle school-aged performers. Derechailo and Anderson started to brainstorm about how they could provide an opportunity to energize the students this summer.

Over the past four weeks, the duo has been amazed by the young actors who are learning all aspects of a theatrical production. From singing, acting and dancing to set construction and costume design, the group is excited to be able to present this show for the public which is a perfect length for families and kids.

Performances are open to the public with admission being free-will donation. Friday’s performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Saturday’s at 2 p.m.

The Lion King JR. tells the story of the epic adventures of a curious cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king. Along the way, the young lion encounters a colorful cast of characters including spunky lioness Nala, charismatic meerkat Timon, and loveable warthog Pumbaa. To claim his rightful place on the throne and save his beloved Pridelands, Simba must find his inner strength and confront his wicked Uncle Scar.

The Lion King JR. features classic songs from the 1994 film such as “Hakuna Matata,” “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” and the Academy Award®-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” as well as additional songs penned for the Broadway production.
