MayDay STOL 2022 Returns To Wayne Municipal Airport May 20 – 22, Complete Details

WAYNE – By this time next week, the second MayDay STOL event will be underway.

From the Wayne Municipal Airport, MayDay STOL 2022 will take over Wayne America from Friday, May 20 – Sunday, May 22.

STOL stands for short take-off and landing.

Travis Meyer said STOL is a big hit in aviation for the traditional side and then you add drag racing where you line two planes up side-by-side.

“They fly 2,000 feet and crank the plane kind of sideways  to slow down,” said Meyer. “Land, turn around, comeback and do the same thing. They have to land past the finish line. It’s not the first one to cross it, it’s the first one to stop.”

New this year will be parking at the Wayne Municipal Airport and a date change to later in May.

Following an impromptu meeting in Wayne with the Nebraska Pilots Facebook group, Scott Hammer added the Wayne Municipal Airport wanted to do something to promote aviation.

“In conjunction with the Airport Authority and the Flying Club this presented an opportunity,” Hammer added. “That along with, Travis and I had been to Oshkosh a number of years in a row. Kind of every time driving home, we what-iffed.”

Volunteers are still needed and those interested can reach out to Meyer at 402-369- 6725 as two-hour time slots are available.

Evening festivities include a bonfire (weather permitting) with Tegan Nissen starting at 7 p.m. on Friday while Saturday’s music will be provided by AquaDog (formed by Adam Manoucheri) around 8 p.m. including the awards ceremony.

All flying is weather permitting, not just rain or shine, but if the wind is gusting too much.

Pilots will be getting certified on Thursday to run the course for the weekend. Time trials will take place during the day on Friday with Saturday being planned to be a race day while a poker run for planes is scheduled for Sunday along with a traditional STOL demonstration.

Sunday is being called a ‘Family Day’ which Meyer is excited to offer a Careers in Aviation Question and Answer Panel starting noon.

“Whether you’re a student in high school/junior high, have questions or concerns or interests in it and don’t quite know what is going on, come out and ask,” Meyer mentioned. “Parents of those kids, come out and ask.”

All are welcome to the panel.

Also, plan on joining MayDay STOL for Friday morning Chamber Coffee at the Wayne Municipal Airport inside the terminal building. The in-person event will begin at 10 a.m. while Facebook Live will start at 10:15 a.m. on the Wayne, NE Facebook page.
