Marsh Madness To Feature Bird Tours, Film On Saturday

PONCA – Family members who plan on visiting Ponca State Park over the next few weeks will have an opportunity to participate in the park’s Marsh Madness events.

The event started last Saturday and will continue onto this Saturday, March 3 as you can plan on attending the Sunrise Bird Tour at 6 a.m., The Big Year Showing at 1 p.m., a Bird Buffet at 3 p.m. and close out the night with a Sunset Bird Tour at 5:15 p.m. Make sure to pre-register by calling 402-755-2284 for both the free tours and the bird buffet, which costs $1 per treat and is limited to 30 people.

Each tour is also limited to 10 people per tour.

The sunrise tour at 6 a.m. will allow you to get up with the birds and join an expert guide to watch waterfowl waking up and continuing their migration. In the evening at 5:15 p.m. this Saturday watch the birds return to the safety of the marsh at dusk. Feel free to bring binoculars, spotting scopes, cameras and bird books.

The Big Year Showing is a funny comedy as three amateur birders take on the quest to spot the greatest number of bird species in a year. The event will be starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. Popcorn will be served with the film lasting approximately an hour and 40 minutes. Meet in the Resource and Education Center.

Also, during the bird buffet just like people, not all birds eat the same things. Certain birds like seeds, while others like insects. Those who attend will find out what your backyard birds like to eat while then making them a special treat.

During Marsh Madness, there will be a 20% discount on all birds merchandise and a 30% discount on mini-lodges.

Other Saturday’s in March include the 10 and 17 for the Marsh Madness event from Ponca State Park. Make sure to visit Nebraska Northeast Parks on Facebook for upcoming events at Ponca State Park. A reminder that all programs are subject to change due to staffing and weather. For questions, call 402-755-2284.
