Make Time For Ponca State Park’s Marsh Madness Saturday

PONCA – Ponca State Park’s Marsh Madness continues on Saturday, March 17th. The park has hosted a whole month of activities dedicated to birds and their spring migration.

The early bird gets the worm, and park-goers can see them do so at the Sunrise Bird Tour starting at 6:30 a.m. An expert guide from the Loess Hills Audubon Society will be on hand to help tourists identify water fowl. Be sure to bring binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras. There is a limit of 10 people per free tour, so pre-registration is required. Call (402) 755-2284.

At 1 p.m., the film “My Life As A Turkey,” will be shown. Guests can watch a man’s year-long journey as a mother turkey. Ice cream will be served during the viewing. Those interested should meet at the Education and Resource Center.

Birds vary greatly from species to species. At 3 p.m. avid learners can discover why birds have different feet, wings and beaks. Hands-on activities will be held to teach people about bird adaptions.

Marsh Madness comes to a close with a Sunset Bird Tour at 6:30 p.m. A guide from the Loess Hills Audubon will be back to guide viewers as they watch the birds return to rest at the marsh. Bird books and spotting scopes will be available to pre-registered guests. Pre-register by calling the same number for the Sunrise Tour.

This weekend there will be at 20 percent discount on all bird merchandise as well as a 30 percent discount on Ponca State Park’s mini-lodges. The Snowman Building Contest will also remain open until the first day of spring, March 19th.
