Majestic Theatre Drive-In Movie Nights Were Successful, More Drive-In Nights Likely

WAYNE – On Friday, June 12, Majestic Theatre held their first drive-in theatre night of the summer. The event was at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. They put this together to thank the community (admission was free) and to support utilities and renovation costs of the theatre due to Coronavirus. Money from concessions was used to help the theatre’s costs.

On Friday night, The Goonies was played at the fairgrounds. Wonder Woman was the picture shown on Saturday night.

Jill Brodersen is the President of the Board for Majestic Theatre. She recalled how many cars showed up, first for Friday night, then for Saturday night, and she added what types of people showed up.

“We had 115 cars (for Friday) … We had exactly 100 cars (for Saturday). Lot’s of people, couples, families, it was such a variety of people that came out to see the movie,” she stated.

A large majority of the cars had multiple people inside. Even though the numbers say 215 cars, there were many more people watching.

Brodersen alluded to how the event went and the idea of putting together another drive-in night.

“It was such a great experience for us to be able to do this for our community,” Brodersen said. “We want to continue to give back to the community for their continued support of the Majestic, and so, we are looking at some other opportunities to have another drive-in event like this.”

There will be a board meeting on Tuesday, June 23, for the Majestic Theatre. They will decide whether or not to open their indoor theatre. That could affect whether or not there will be another drive-in movie night.

Jill Brodersen talked about a couple things that went well at the drive-in nights, including a little surprise the theatre received from some people.

“We had such a great turnout, a lot of the people that came the first night, came again the second night,” she exclaimed. “Then donations, I mean we weren’t even asking for donations.”

There’s one thing that could change for the drive-in nights. They may try to use a different screen rather than the tarp they used the first time.

It took about a month and a half for Majestic Theatre to setup for drive-in movie night, but they want to give a special thank you to everyone in the community for helping them stay afloat during this time.
