NORFOLK – The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD) amended the Interlocal Agreement with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC). The Agreement involves the Willow Creek State Recreation Area (SRA), southwest of Pierce. The amendment will have LENRD pay $10,000 per year to the NGPC. The payment will fund NGPC employees to maintain the Willow Creek Area.
The two entities are in a lease agreement, with the LENRD owning the property. This agreement has been continuous since the SRA opened in 1984. There is a flood control structure that protects Pierce and landowners just north of Norfolk. The Willow Creek SRA is 1,633 acers total, which includes a 700-acer reservoir, camping, fishing, boating, and more.
The LENRD is working on improving the water quality of the lake in the SRA. They hired the engineering firm, FYRA Engineering, to study the water. They will look at the phosphorus content in the reservoir and examine the core soil samples.
The Board of Directors at LENRD voted to help pay expenses for the 2020 Scrap Tire Collection at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Scribner. The Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant will cover part of the expense. The rest will be split 50-50 between LENRD and the Papio-Missouri River NRD. No more than $10,000 from LENRD will be used. Collection will occur in late August.
The LENRD board meets every month. Their next meeting will be August 27 at 7:30 p.m. LENRD manages natural resources in the area. To keep up with LENRD’s actions, sign up for their monthly email update at www.lenrd.org.
