WAYNE – Join the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department on Friday, October 12 for Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m.
Plan on visiting the Wayne Fire Hall, located at 510 Tomar Drive.
Phil Monahan has been the Fire Chief at the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department for five years while being on the department for 16 years. Monahan said voting for any officers happens in May.
“We vote for the chief, secretary, treasurer, vice president, president and rescue captain,” said Monahan. “The chief picks his two assistant chiefs.”
To be an assistant chief, you have to complete two years of fire school and be in good-standing with the department. Assistant chiefs are rotated every two years.
The second of two Fireman’s Breakfast events was held last Sunday. Monahan said it went over very well with roughly 1,300 people being served.
“We thank the community for supporting us, tremendously,” Monahan mentioned. “It’s just crazy how they came out and everything in the cold, damp, dreary day. We can’t thank the community enough for supporting us.”
Money raised will help the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department go after tools for fire & rescue.
Members meet the first Tuesday of the month for meetings, on the second Tuesday for fire drill, third Tuesday for rescue drill and the fourth Tuesday is when the Business Board and Fire Board meet.
The Wayne Volunteer Fire Department can hold up to six cadets and 46 members.
“It takes around $2,500 to outfit a firefighter,” Monahan mentioned. “That’s from head to toe with all the gear, helmet, the gloves, everything you can think of.”
The Spring Fireman’s Breakfast will be planned for some time around March or April.
