LENRD Accepting Applications For New Irrigated Acers, Starting October 1

NORFOLK – The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD) Board of Directors voted to establish a sign-up period to receive applications for new irrigated acers. The sign-up period will run from October 1, 2020 until October 31, 2020.

A map of which locations are eligible for application can be found at the LENRD office in Norfolk starting Friday, September 4.

Quality Management Subareas and Phase 3 areas within the LENRD will not be considered during this sign-up period. Applications will be available online and at the LENRD office.

The board authorized an additional two acre-inches per acre for irrigation. This is due to the current drought conditions. This applies to any area subject to an Annual Groundwater Allocation in the LENRD Quality Management Subareas, for the establishment of cover crops this fall.

The board instructed staff to provide a letter of support to the Nebraska Environmental Trust (NET). This is to help establish the UNL Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS). They decided to devote up to $1,000 toward the effort.

An effort to complete the Watershed Flood Prevention and Operations (WFPO) for the Maple Creek area is still in progress. The board voted to sign a contract with FYRA engineering to complete the project.

LENRD General Manager, Mike Sousek, mentioned that he is excited to work with FYRA to help reduce flood risks in the area.

They also decided to work with a resident in Stanton County to obtain a well permit for an illegal well. If the necessary documentation is provided, they will issue the permit. The cease and desist order will remain in place for five years.

The board voted to approve updates to the average cost dockets for the Agroforestry and Conservation Cost-Share Programs. There will be a Budget Hearing for this on Thursday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m.

LENRD board and staff meet each month to create plans for the conservation of natural resources for the future. Their next meeting will be Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit their website at www.lenrd.org.
